Legal Assistance for New Mexicans

With the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic reaching into all corners of our lives, it is important to know what civil legal rights you have and how to access them.  The Supreme Court Commission on Access to Justice has put in place many statutes related to protecting you from effects of the pandemic in regard to rent/evictions, workplace-related rights and other civil legal events.

There are agencies in New Mexico that can assist you in navigating through such things as evictions, foreclosures, bankruptcy and family law matters.  New Mexico Legal Aid provides free services to eligible low-income New Mexico residents with civil (non-criminal) matters. You can call them at 833-LGL-HELP.  The New Mexico Poverty Law Center is another organization that offers information.  You can find them at http://nmpovertylaw.org/covid-19-resources/ .

Veterans with legal questions have a new way to access legal help.  On February 2, 2021 volunteers with the State Bar Young Lawyers Division will take your phone call and provide brief legal consults on a variety of civil legal questions.  Each veteran must pre-register with Nathan DeLeon ( Veterans Justice Outreach, NM VA Health Care System) at 505-206-9086 in order to take advantage of this opportunity.

If you have any questions about the above information, you can call the Silver City Public Library at 575-538-3672.
