September is Library Card Sign-Up Month, and the Silver City Public Library will celebrate by offering one week of free library card replacements on Thursday, September 24 through Wednesday, September 30, 2026, during normal library operating hours. Each person’s first library card is always free, but the library normally charges $5.00 to replace lost cards. We offer free library card replacement days once or twice every year. It is a great opportunity for those who have lost their cards to regain access to library resources and services.
Community members should take note that many services don’t require having a card. Those without a library card can still use the library’s public computers and wireless internet. Printing, copying, and meeting rooms are available to everyone regardless of membership. Library events and activities are also completely free and open to the public.
Besides the books, audiobooks, DVDs, and internet hotspots available to borrow with a library card, members can use their cards to access a wide array of digital services from the comfort of home, including
- downloadable e-books and audiobooks in the Libby app
- movies, TV, music, and more in Hoopla
- films and TV from Kanopy
- Flipster digital magazines including The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Wired, and more
- Rocket Languages language learning tools

Community members can also access The New York Times online, with no paywall, thanks to the State Library.
Ancestry and GrantStation research databases are available to use in the library building.
