Thinking Money for Kids Activities and Tablets

Join us to play Pet Cents Tuesday, December 9, 4:00pm! Adopt a pet — and take on the financial responsibilities of pet ownership — as you visit various stations around the room. At each stop, purchase supplies and accessories for your pet. Be ready for unexpected events that could result in a financial windfall or expense! The goal of the game is to meet a pet’s needs while retaining as much money as possible. This game is geared to kids ages 7 and up.

The library’s financial literacy games and educational tablets are provided by the Thinking Money for Kids grant from the American Library Association and the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.

The library has 5 amazing tabletop/floor games for different age levels designed to teach financial skills in a fun way. Currency Conga helps kids learn to identify coins and bills; Pet Cents allows kids to adopt an imaginary pet on a budget; Making Moo-lah challenges teams to invest and run a farm; Piggy Bank Theater introduces young kids to the concepts “earn,” “spend,” and “save”; and Penny Pincher’s Party challenges kids to plan a party on a budget. Lots more details can be found at the grant website here: https://www.ala.org/tools/programming/thinking-money-kids/programkit/grantee-materials/kit-contents

Teachers, childcare providers, and others who work with groups of kids are invited to contact programming and outreach librarian Lillian and the children’s and young adult librarian to inquire about borrowing games for their classes/groups. Call 575-538-3672 or email programs@silvercitypubliclibrary.org.

The library also has Playaway tablets pre-loaded with financial literacy games that families can borrow to take home. Check out our display in the children’s area, and ask a library staff member for help to borrow.
