Even if you are not writing a crime novel, your fiction may contain a hidden, behind-the-scenes thread meant to come out in the climax with a profound impact. Award-winning author and writing instructor Kris Neri will present a “Demystifying the Mystery” workshop that will address the elements needed to write successful mysteries and thrillers, but also science fiction, fantasy, romance, and various crossovers, that use some unknown-to-the-reader aspects. With a workshop divided into parts, Kris will address the issues surrounding behind-the-scenes threads, including how to deal with antagonism, the necessity of red herrings, avoiding transparency, and other points. In the second part, she’ll address the best way to plot a crime or other category of novel employing an unknown-to-the-reader thread.
Kris Neri’s latest novel, Hopscotch Life, an accept-yourself-in-all-your-glory novel, was a recent New Mexico-Arizona Book Award winner. She also writes the Tracy Eaton mysteries, the Samantha Brennan & Annabelle Haggerty magical series, which features a questionable psychic who teams up with a modern Celtic goddess-FBI agent, as well as thrillers and short stories. Kris’s novels have been honored by such prestigious awards as: the Agatha, Anthony, Macavity, Lefty, and New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards. She is a three-time Lefty nominee for her humor. Kris also teaches writing for the prestigious Writers’ Program of the UCLA Extension School and the Sisters in Crime Guppy Chapter. She lives in Silver City with her husband and two pushy terriers and is on the steering committee of the Southwest Word Fiesta.
