The NM Commission on Access to Justice is offering free webinars on civil legal issues designed for representatives from non-profit organizations, educational institutions, health care providers, social service agencies, local government, libraries, faith-based associations and the business community. The webinars are an opportunity for agencies that work with community to learn about the legal resources available to community members.

The next webinar is Wednesday, September 23, 12:00-2:00pm on Kinship-Guardianship Issues and Resources. Speakers are Sophie Asher and Mariel G. Willow, J.D., of Pegasus Legal Services for Children. Email aocgcs@nmcourts.gov to register.

On Wednesday, October 7, 12:00-2:00pm there will be a session on Landlord-Tenant Issues and Resources.

The NM Commission on Access to Justice is an independent statewide body dedicated to expanding and improving civil legal assistance in the state. The commission offers resources for people representing themselves on this web page, including a link to the NM District Court self-help guide. Another important resource for legal help is NM Legal Aid. Their Silver City office is at 301 W. College Ave. (College Avenue Plaza) Suite 10, 575-388-0091. COMMUNITY WEBINAR SERIES: KINSHIP-GUARDIANSHIP ISSUES AND RESOURCES, Wednesday, September 23, 2020, 12:00pm-2:00pm.  This webinar is designed to provide information to community based organizations on kinshipguardianship issues including resources and options for addressing those issues. Kinship Guardianship is a legal relationship that is established between a minor child and the adult caring for that child. The webinar will cover basic information, advice, and assistance. Sophie Asher came to New Mexico from Seattle in 2012 and graduated from UNM Law in 2015. She worked as a public defender in Albuquerque, focusing on misdemeanors and the Native American Healing to Wellness Court. At Pegasus she works in the kinship guardianship program to help care givers gain legal guardianship of children. Sophie also teaches Kindergarten and First Grade at Congregation Albert Sunday School. Mariel G. Willow, JD, assists grandparents and other caregivers in obtaining legal guardianship of children. Mariel received her B.A. from University of New Mexico in 2010, and her J.D. from Tulane University School of Law in 2014. Mariel returned home to New Mexico and began her legal work as a staff attorney with DNA-People’s Legal Services. Prior to joining Pegasus, Mariel was an Assistant District Attorney in Bernalillo County.
