Seed Library New Location, New Management

The library is happy to announce that the Grant County Seed Library has found an excellent new home with the National Center for Frontier Communities (NCFC). Now called the Southwest New Mexico Seed Library, the library is located at Binary Circuits, 907 1/2 N. Pope St., in the quonset hut next to the old LifeQuest Building.

The files and paperwork for the Grant County Seed Library sit on shelves near the public library's information desk.
The seed library’s old location in the public library

During the time that we had the seed library here in the Silver City Public Library, we relied on volunteers to organize the collection of seeds and process donated seeds. The volunteers also kept a list of borrowers/donors, sent out periodic email updates, and organized educational presentations on gardening. Over time, fewer people were able to help with this work. The seed library became “dormant” before the coronavirus pandemic began. It is encouraging that another community organization has been able to step up to provide this service to the community. All the seeds that were here at the Silver City Public Library are now with the new Southwest New Mexico Seed Library.

The NCFC also received grant funding from the New Mexico Foundation’s Permaculture Fund to buy storage boxes, seed packets, and a refrigerator for preserving the seeds.

There will also be a seed library branch at the Bayard Public Library when it re-opens to the public.

The Silver City Daily Press published an article with more details about the new seed library here. If you have questions, you can contact Ben Rasmussen at 597-0032 or brasmussen@frontierus.org or visit frontierus.org.
