The Silver City Public Library will hold a public meeting to invite comments and questions about their plans for a new Internet connection, which will require Internet filtering as mandated by the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). The meeting will be held virtually because of the public health crisis, on Monday, July 27, 10:00am MDT. Community members are invited to attend the meeting, or submit comments and questions beforehand to Lillian Galloway at programs@silvercitymail.com or by phone at 575-538-3672.

The library is getting a new Internet connection that will provide much faster internet speeds for people who use the library’s public computers or wireless internet. The new connection will be subsidized with federal “e-rate” funding, which requires that the library implement Internet filtering software to comply with CIPA and protect children from accessing material harmful to minors on the Internet. Children’s Internet safety concerns are included in the library’s computer and Internet policy. Adults will be able to ask library staff to disable the Internet filter for any lawful purpose.
To voice comments or questions before the meeting, contact library assistant director Lillian Galloway at 575-538-3672 or programs@silvercitymail.com.
