Ruben Leyva Speaks at the Silver City Public Library

The Silver City Public Library will host “Diving Deeply into Apache Family History,” a presentation by Ruben Leyva, on Friday, February 28, 3:00pm. The presentation is accessible simultaneously in-person and online, and Mr. Leyva will join us virtually. Through generational stories of survival, cultural continuity, and sovereignty, Ruben Leyva, a PhD student in the Native American Studies Department at the University of New Mexico, emphasizes the enduring significance of his heritage. By honoring these stories, we celebrate the strength of the Gila and Mimbreño Apache, who have remained strong amidst profound challenges, grounding their future in the wisdom of their past. This presentation reflects the resilience and adaptability of Apache families navigating the region’s histories of conflict and displacement, conveying a deep sense of belonging.

Regarding his doctoral work, Ruben Leyva said, “I desire to publish ethnographic work on behalf of my people, the Mimbres Band of Gila Apache, today known as Gila Apache or Chíhéne, by documenting our history and advocating for our sovereignty.” Leyva publishes detailed columns in the Arizona Silver Belt newspaper and the Grant County Beat about Gila Apache history, and he made six presentations about tribal history and sovereignty last year. Leyva has a bachelor of science degree in business administration and a master of science degree in business administration with an emphasis in criminal justice administration from Trident University International. He also earned a Senior Executives in State and Local Government certificate from Harvard Kennedy School.
