“A framed photo, worn with time, was always featured prominently in my husband’s old family home. I always wondered, Who was that eager young soldier grinning  so broadly in his freshly pressed WWII uniform? And who could’ve  imagined the compelling story that lay waiting to be discovered behind that quiet scene? I made it my quest as an author to find out more.” -Kathy Howell

With Hearts of Honor is loosely based on the true story of Howell’s husband’s uncle, Jack Daniel Sprunk, a twenty-one-year-old youth who survived the Bataan Death March, only to later drown while aboard a Japanese Hellship that was torpedoed.

During World War II, a small-town reporter is promoted to cover globe-trotting assignments. At the same time she finds herself deeply involved with a family from her neighborhood, and together they are dragged into the frenzy of war. From the Philippines to London, from North Africa to Paris and beyond, the reader is transported back to the early 1940’s, where adventure, romance, and even tragedy reigned supreme for the “Greatest Generation”. Readers will laugh and cry as they experience a family’s hope, anguish, and ultimately, peace.

With Hearts of Honor is a love letter to all the heroes and heroines of World War II, especially the brave folk of Grant County, New Mexico. Included are their courageous families who waited behind patiently, suffered silently, and made innumerable sacrifices.
