We have successfully rescheduled our book talk with David Remley for Tuesday, December 22, 4:00pm. Remley’s talk will be brief but informative, perhaps a welcome change of pace during a busy time of year. Adios Nuevo Mexico: the Santa Fe Journal of John Watts in 1859 is a fascinating window into the experience of a teenage boy in nineteenth-century Santa Fe. Anyone interested in New Mexican history and culture is invited to attend this free public event at the Silver City Public Library, located at 515 West College Avenue in Silver City.
On research for a book in Bloomington, Indiana, David came across John Watts’s teen age diary, kept in Santa Fe just before the Civil War. Watts’ father, Judge John S. Watts, of the Territorial Supreme Court, was a political friend of President Lincoln, and a charter member of the Santa Fe Ring. “Perhaps of greatest interest,” wrote historian David J. Weber, “is the diary’s intimate view of daily life in Santa Fe.”
